Jodie Brunstetter, the wife of Sen. Peter Brunstetter (R-NC), told poll workers that her husband sponsored an anti-gay marriage amendment to protect “the Caucasian race.” Here’s a partial transcript of what poll workers told a freelance reporter during a videotaped confrontation with the senator’s wife:

MICHAEL: “I had my back to her like this. She said, ‘The reason my husband my husband wrote Amendment 1 was because the Caucasian race is diminishing and we need to uh, reproduce.”

UNIDENTIFIED POLL WORKER: “(Mrs. Brunsetter said) … the Caucasian race is diminishing. ?The reason that’s a problem is that it was white people that founded this country.”

“She just wants a white majority so the good ‘ol US of A can stay white.”

Mrs. Brunstetter admitted using the word Caucasian, but said her comments weren’t “race related.” Stupid! Just stupid. This follows the recent revelation that the anti-gay National Organization for Marriage tried to implement a racially divisive strategy that would pit blacks vs. gays and gays vs. Latinos.

Just goes to show that racism, homophobia and stupidity go hand in hand.
